Yu-Gi-Oh! Rent-a-Girlfriend Situation: Inadvertent Real World Creation

Recreating the eponymous premise of the popular harem romantic comedy, “Rent-a-Girlfriend,” a proficient Yu-Gi-Oh! enthusiast resorted to employing the services of a real-life rental girl agency.

As per the detailed account narrated on the Twitter handle @DeltyThe73rd, the Yu-Gi-Oh! player resorted to this desperate measure to seek out a worthy adversary. Subsequently, the player developed a liking for a particular girl who arrived, and consequently, persistently requested for her presence in subsequent sessions. After a few sessions, the girl went out of her way to create a personalized deck to be used in the games.

What Rent-a-Girlfriend Is About

The manga series “Rent-a-Girlfriend,” authored by Reiji Miyajima, premiered in Weekly Shonen Magazine in July 2017. The story follows Kazuya Kinoshita, a heartbroken 21-year-old who turns to a rental girlfriend website in a last-ditch attempt to heal from his recent breakup. There, he meets Chizuru Mizuhara, the most highly-rated girlfriend on the site. While Kazuya initially intended to end the fake relationship, he decides to keep it going for the sake of his sick grandmother. As Kazuya grows closer to Chizuru, his ex-girlfriend Mami Nanami becomes jealous.

In July 2020, TMS Entertainment adapted Miyajima’s manga into an anime series, which gained immense popularity and led to a second season in July 2022. In September 2022, TMS announced that they had approved production for “Rent-a-Girlfriend” Season 3, which is set to debut in July 2023. While Kazuomi Koga directed the first two seasons, Shin’ya Une will be directing Season 3, having previously served as an Episode Director and Storyboard Artist. Mitsutaka Hirota, who previously served as the Script and Series Composition lead for Seasons 1 and 2, will return for Season 3.

Although Koga is no longer directing “Rent-a-Girlfriend,” he is involved in another project that may pique the interest of fans. “TenPuru,” a forthcoming harem romantic comedy anime series, follows Akemitsu Akegami, a socially awkward young man who renounces worldly desires to become a Buddhist monk. However, the temple where he resides is also home to numerous beautiful women, each vying for his affections. “TenPuru” is based on the original manga series of the same name, authored by Kimitake Yoshioka, which launched on Kodansha’s Comic Days platform in September 2018.

The anime adaptation of “Rent-a-Girlfriend” is available on Crunchyroll, while the manga is available in English through Kodansha US.
